Technical FAQ

In all industries there are rules and regulations to adhere to, and the fireplace industry is no exception. In fact, due to the nature of the products involved, if anything through necessity, there are more regulations within this industry.

In order to help potential purchasers, existing owners and installers of Magiglo fires, we have compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions. This section covers general and most frequently asked questions.

Where technical advice is given, is not intended as a substitute for a site visit by a competent person. All installations must comply with the relevant installation instructions and regulations.

 
Q. Can I replace Coals with Pebbles?
A. In most cases this is possible:- (a) It can be done if shown in manual supplied with fire. (b) If not shown in manual, please consult Magiglo before proceeding.
Q. My Magiglo fire has logs can I replace with coal or pebbles?
A. Unfortunately fires supplied with logs are not suitable for use with coal or pebbles.
Q. What control options can I have with my fire?
A. Magiglo offers a range of controls for your fire:- Standard Control - Single knob under the fire used to light pilot and vary flame picture. Remote Control - Hand held control with buttons to vary flame picture. Trim Switch - Buttons on side of trim to vary flame picture. Optimum Control - Wall mounted switch of up to 5m away from fire to vary flame picture.
Q. Can I use a Magiglo fire in a bedroom?
A. Yes. Certain restrictions apply. Please ring our technical support line for further advice.
Q. What size flue is required to install a basket fire?
A. Flue size is controlled by the opening size of your fireplace. Consult your CORGI installer who should able to calculate required flue size.
Q. Do I have to have my chimney lined?
A. Appliances suitable for a Class 1 flue do not normally require the flue to be lined. However the flue should be swept, inspected and tested for leaks prior to installation. If the condition of flue is very poor then it will need to be lined.
Q. Can I install a 16” gas tray within a 18” opening to avoid Air Vent Regulations.
A. Magiglo states within the installation manual the following. Appliance must be gassed below 7kW.ie 6.9kW.and meet current standards.
Q. I would like to install an appliance using LPG. Can I use Butane?
A. Unfortunately no. Only Propane gas can be used.
Q. Can I convert my LPG appliance to NG (Natural Gas) or NG to LPG.
A. Unfortunately it is not possible to convert from one gas to another.
Q. I would like to convert my Rear Vent Powerflue to a Side Vent.
A. Owing to the vast construction differences within the appliance this is not possible and no DIY modifications must be carried out.
Q. Can I spray the ceramic back and coals with black paint?
A. Magiglo does not recommend the backs be sprayed as they could very often discolour and blister immediately the fire is lit.
Q. Do I need any additional ventilation (air brick) with a glass fronted fire?
A. Only balanced flue appliances do not require additional ventilation. A glass fronted appliance may not necessarily be room balanced flue or sealed and guidance should be sought if there is any doubt.
Q. Can I use a Magiglo appliance without a chimney?
A. Yes. The following appliances would be suitable. (a) Duo Power Rear or Side Vent. (b) Affinity Power Rear or Side Vent. (c) Concept Balance Flue.
